Digi-Tiles – Serafin Aebli

Special
KonzertIn the audiovisual performance Digi-Tiles, image and sound interact in real time. Beginning with simple diatonic melodies, the piece evolves into complex structures and dystopian sonic landscapes. Distorted field recordings merge with synthetic textures, creating an atmosphere that shifts between observation and interpretation.Rhythmically edited smartphone recordings from the urban environment of Bangalore form patterns and interwoven structures that are mirrored in the music. The sometimes complex rhythms and irregular meters are inspired by Carnatic talas explored during a residency in India.Situated between composition and improvisation, the performance reflects the contradictions of contemporary urban life—speed and congestion, connectivity and isolation—and translates them into an intense interplay of image, rhythm, and sound.BiographySerafin Aebli is a composer and sound artist working at the intersection of music, technology, and transdisciplinary practice. Often collaborating with artists from dance, theater, and the visual arts, he expands sound beyond traditional concert formats while examining social structures. He studied music and media art at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB) and composition at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). His work engages deeply with questions of sound reproduction and the spatial staging of sound, frequently employing complex loudspeaker systems. He is currently living in Berlin as the recipient of a studio residency grant from the City of Zurich.
